# 8 Tips for More Energy-Efficient Work on the Construction Site

Construction sites are true energy consumers. From planning and technology to construction work and completion – there are many opportunities to save energy and conserve resources.

High efficiency and productivity are the goals for any construction site. But how can construction managers actually ensure that all work is carried out as efficiently and energy-consciously as possible? We present 8 tips on how to make construction work on the site more energy-efficient.

## 1. Prefer Electric Machines or Refuel with Climate-Neutral Fuel

Electric machines can make a significant contribution to reducing energy consumption on the construction site. However, it is not always possible to [**use electric vehicles for construction projects**](/de/mietlexikon/elektro-baumaschinen/) – especially for large machinery. In this case, it is advisable to at least refuel construction machinery with fuels such as biodiesel or our CO2-neutral diesel – this can also help with sustainable energy savings.

## 2. The Right Transport of Building Materials

The general use of machines can also be made more efficient. Construction processes such as transporting building materials from A to B often consume a lot of energy. However, significant savings can be made during transport. Not all building materials need to be transported with a large machine; often a small machine is sufficient. Therefore: Better to check the machinery inventory twice more than to use a machine that is too large. At klarx, you will find more than 530,000 construction machines and equipment, enabling you to fully equip your construction site.

## 3. Maintain Machines & Reduce Fuel Consumption

Fuel consumption should not be overlooked either. Many construction companies consume too much fuel, such as diesel or petrol – electricity consumption can also be very high. Machines with high fuel consumption should be used efficiently: Only the use of regularly maintained machines guarantees lower fuel consumption. An analysis/overview of all machines is important to identify inefficient machines and reduce their use.

## 4. Select the Right Machine

Another decisive factor regarding energy efficiency is the size of the machines: Large machines typically consume more fuel. To promote energy efficiency, it makes sense to choose smaller machines where possible.

**Our Tip: Evaluate the appropriate machine size in advance so that deployment can be more efficient.**

## 5. Raise Awareness Among Construction Site Employees

Employees on the construction site must also be sensitized to this topic. After all, only those who know how to save resources on the construction site and what certain actions can achieve will actually apply this knowledge on site. Dedicated training on energy saving can be worthwhile here. The time for training should definitely be invested. In the long run, this can lead to both energy and cost savings.

## 6. Use Short Transport Routes for Rental Machines

Not only is using the right machine for transporting from A to B relevant, but also [short transport routes when renting construction machinery](/en/benefits). Why rent a construction machine 60 kilometers away from the site when it can be done more efficiently with klarx? Thanks to our own logistics centers and more than 5,100 partner stations, we guarantee not only availability but also the shortest route for the machine to the work site. Additionally, our machines from the logistics center are refueled with climate-neutral diesel.

## 7. Analyze and Optimize Idle Times

Often, construction machine engines continue to run unattended on construction sites even though they are not in use. This leads to unnecessary energy consumption and theoretically avoidable emissions. Using telematics units, klarx can process and evaluate data on idle times for machines from the logistics center, so that deployment times can be optimized. ## 8. Energy Efficiency Through Renewable Energy

Renewable energies use energy forms that can be regenerated from the environment, such as solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, or geothermal heat. A construction project is "sustainable" when it fulfills its sociocultural function and its creation and operation over its lifecycle are associated with resource efficiency in both ecological and economic terms ([**Source**](https://www.umweltrat.de/SharedDocs/Downloads/DE/06_Hintergrundinformationen/2016_2020/2016_09_Messari_Becker_Artikel_Energiewende_Bausektor_et.pdf?__blob=publicationFile&v=7)). At klarx, we support the construction of ground-mounted systems nationwide with machines from our logistics center. This means that our customers build approximately 1 GW of ground-mounted systems annually with us, which leads to significantly greater energy savings in the traditional sense.

### Energy Saving is Important for the Future

Since environmental awareness – also in a political sense – is increasingly gaining importance, the topic of energy saving is crucial for your construction site. Good energy efficiency can also have an impact on who receives contracts for construction projects in the future: Energy management can be a decisive factor alongside factors such as work performance or reliability when awarding construction contracts.
