# How long does it take to dig a hole with an excavator?

Before you start with excavation work, you often ask yourself: "How long does it take to dig a hole with an excavator?" In this article, we explain how to calculate the required time in three simple steps so you can plan your excavation work efficiently. At the end of the article, you'll also find a video explaining how to operate a mini excavator.

## How long does it take to dig an excavation pit?

You've already rented an [**excavator**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/bagger) and want to start digging right away? No problem! For those who want to get started immediately, we've summarized the formula for calculating the required time:

Duration (in hours) = Volume of the hole (in cubic meters) ÷ Hourly output of the excavator (in cubic meters per hour)

This formula may seem complicated at first glance, so we'll explain the calculation step by step:

## Step 1: How to calculate the hourly output of an excavator

To determine the hourly output of an excavator, there are various tables that specify the output depending on soil conditions and environmental factors. A simple yet reliable approach is to use the "[Landshut Formula](https://www.fachschule-gartenbau.de/laformel.htm)". This allows for a rough estimate of an excavator's hourly output:

Hourly output of the excavator (in cubic meters per hour) = Engine power of the excavator (in kW) x 0.75

If the engine power in kW is not known, the calculation can also be done using engine power in PS:

Hourly output of the excavator (in cubic meters per hour) = Engine power of the excavator (in PS) x 0.55

The factors 0.75 and 0.55 are standard factors. They are derived from average values and provide a good basis for your calculations.

## Step 2: Calculate the volume of your excavation

The hourly output indicates how much material can be excavated within one hour. To know how many cubic meters of soil you need to remove, calculate the volume of the hole. The volume depends on the shape of the hole:

**Rectangular footprint (e.g., for a pool):**

Volume (in cubic meters) = Length x Width x Height (in meters)

## Step 2: Calculate the volume of your excavation

**Hemispherical footprint (e.g., for a pond):**

Volume (in cubic meters) = 2 x Radius³ (in meters)

Remember that these calculations serve as a rough guideline, as actual site conditions may vary.

## Step 3: Calculate the duration of the excavation

Once you know the volume of the hole to be excavated and the hourly output of the excavator, you can calculate the required time:

Duration (in hours) = Volume of the hole (in cubic meters) ÷ Hourly output of the excavator (in cubic meters per hour)

This formula gives you a good estimate of how long the excavation will take. However, note that the actual duration depends on the excavator operator's experience and the specific site conditions.

### Example: How long does it take to dig a pool or pond with an excavator?

Let's say you want to dig a rectangular pool that is **8.50 meters long**, **2.50 meters wide**, and **1.50 meters deep**. You rent a [**mini excavator**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/bagger/minibagger/s) with an engine power of 11.8 kW.

## Step 1: Calculate the hourly output of the excavator

Hourly output (in cubic meters per hour) = 11.8 kW x 0.75 = 8.85 cubic meters per hour

## Step 2: Calculate the volume of the pool

Volume (in cubic meters) = 8.50 x 2.50 x 1.50 = 31.9 cubic meters

## Step 3: Calculate the duration

Duration (in hours) = 31.9 cubic meters ÷ 8.85 cubic meters per hour = approx. 3.6 hours

So you'll need about three and a half to four hours to excavate the pool. Keep in mind that inexperienced operators may need more time, and you should also allow additional time for idling or transporting the excavator.

## How do I operate a mini excavator?

To help you get started with a mini excavator, we've created **a video** that explains the basic functions. After watching, you can get started right away and use your excavator efficiently.
