# Telescopic Loader or Wheel Loader, Which Machine for What Purpose?

What are the advantages of each machine? Which machine is suitable for which purpose? In klarx's daily rental business, [**telescopic loaders**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader) and [**wheel loaders**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/radlader/s) are classics. Both impress with versatile applications and easy operation. Nevertheless, the machines have individual strengths and weaknesses. Occasionally, customers are uncertain whether they need a telescopic machine or a wheel loader for their planned project.

## The Telescopic Loader – Characteristics and Use

For [**telescopic loaders**](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/teleskopmaschinen/teleskoplader/s), numerous designations exist such as telehandlers, telescopic boom lifts, telescopic stackers, or [**rotary telescopic loaders**](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/teleskopmaschinen/roto-teleskoplader/s). All synonyms describe the same working principle: a telescopic machine with an extendable arm to which attachments can be mounted. The telescopic loader is therefore also called an equipment carrier because the movable arm can be equipped with the most varied [attachments](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/teleskopmaschinen/anbaugeraete-teleskoplader).

Through **flexible attachment** of, for example, forks, cable winches, load hooks, but also a work basket for conversion into a [work platform](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/arbeitsbuehnen), the construction machine can be adapted **individually** to requirements. Unlike a [forklift](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/stapler-lagertechnik), where the load is moved vertically, the telescopic loader can **move loads horizontally as well**. This is the great advantage of telescopic machines. With them, remote or awkwardly positioned places can be reached that are far from the machine. This is why telescopic loaders are often used to move loads on construction sites to upper floors. Thanks to the extendable telescopic arm, the load can be lowered several meters away from the machine into a building. Higher-positioned branches can also be easily reached using a work basket with this machine.

## Reaching New Heights with Secure Footing

However, telescopic loaders are mainly used for **lifting and loading operations**. Thanks to the enormous **mobility**, great **stability** and, above all, the **adjustable reach** of the loading arm, work can be performed at heights of up to 26 meters with the telescopic loader. The great stability in operation enables the transport of high payload. Additionally, stability is supported on some machines by extendable stabilizer legs. This makes it the perfect construction machine for flexibly lifting heavy loads or reaching difficult-to-access locations. The following video provides insight into the operation of a telescopic loader:

## Flexible Thanks to Rear Axle Steering and Rotating Superstructure

Another advantage that makes the telescopic loader a "jack-of-all-trades" is the dynamic all-wheel drive. It enables the transport of loads on terrain. Some models are also equipped with rear-wheel steering, making them extremely maneuverable and usable in the tightest spaces. Most machines with all-wheel drive also have off-road-capable tires. If the vehicle is equipped with an orange rotating beacon light, it can be used in road traffic at speeds of up to 20 km/h.

A special class of telescopic loaders are [**rotary telescopic loaders**](/en/mieten/hebetechnik/teleskopmaschinen/roto-teleskoplader/s). These specialized machines feature a rotating superstructure and can therefore move loads like a mobile crane in a 360° radius around the machine. Combined with a wide range of attachments, the rotary telescopic loader offers maximum flexibility when it comes to moving loads. Attachments also include buckets. Telescopic loaders can thus be used for simple earthmoving operations – a domain where the following machine is actually at home.

## The Wheel Loader – The Advantages

The great strength of the [**wheel loader**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/radlader/s) is earthmoving work. Therefore, it is mainly used at earthwork construction sites, quarries, recycling facilities, and in forestry. It is terrain-capable thanks to low-pressure tires with strong tread. This allows the wheel loader to easily master soft ground and smooth out unevenness. The large tires with strong tread are advantageous for pushing operations. The primary benefit consists in loading and transporting goods over short distances. However, achieving longer transport distances is no problem thanks to a powerful drive. If the vehicle is equipped with an orange rotating beacon light, it can be used in road traffic at speeds of up to 20 km/h.

### Smaller Stacking Operations Also Possible with the Wheel Loader

Wheel loaders can also be rented with a fork for lifting loads. However, the maximum lifting height of wheel loaders is significantly lower than that of telescopic machines. Furthermore, with the wheel loader, the load can only be moved vertically up and down, not horizontally. Wheel loaders should therefore only be used for loading trailers or trucks, or for moving pallet goods on the construction site from A to B. Thanks to off-road-capable tires and all-wheel drive, the wheel loader can transport its load on terrain just as confidently as the telescopic loader. Moreover, there is a wide range of [attachments](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/anbaugeraete-radlader) for wheel loaders that transform the machine into a [sweeper](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/anbaugeraete-radlader/anbau-kehrmaschinen/s/anbau-kehrmaschinen), [mower](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/anbaugeraete-radlader/radlader-maehgeraete/s/radlader-maehgeraete), [drill](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/anbaugeraete-radlader/radlader-erdbohrer/s/radlader-erdbohrer), or [grapple](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/anbaugeraete-radlader/radlader-greifer/s/radlader-greifer). This also shows the wheel loader to be a flexible machine. However, its work is limited to operations near ground level or in areas below two meters. When it's time to reach new heights, the telescopic loader comes into play.

## Overview: Which Machine Do I Use for What?

So, what can be said about the optimal applications for telescopic machines and wheel loaders?

Telescopic loaders are best suited for the following requirements:

- You want to move loads higher than two meters.
- You need to move loads horizontally away from the machine.
- You want to deploy a mobile machine in the tightest of spaces.
- You want to work with a rotary telescopic loader in a 360° radius around the machine.

Use a [**wheel loader**](/en/mieten/erdbewegungsmaschinen/lader/radlader/s) if you...

- mainly perform earthmoving operations.
- want to lift loads of only about two meters on your own axle.
- want to push together soil or other material.
- want to deploy a mobile machine in the tightest of spaces.
